Term 3 Week 2 Thursday 29th July, 2010 PAGE 2

It is of great benefit for Wangi Wangi Public School to have a P&C. The P&C enables parents and citizens to meet together to determine the needs and aspirations of the school community. The Education Act 1990, ensures that a P&C Association may be established at any government school.
The objects of the associations are to:
• promote the interests of the school by bringing parents, citizens, pupils and teaching staff into close co-operation;
• assist in providing equipment required by the school;
• report to the Minister the material requirements of the school
• assist the teaching staff in establishment of school policy and management in all facets of school activity.

Wangi Wangi P&C meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every month and we have changed the meeting time to 7.30 in the hope that more interested parties will find this time a little more convenient and be able to attend on a regular basis.

  • No more eggs available, throwing too many out.

Moved to accept: Barry Croft Seconded: Lee-Anne Wrobel

GENERAL BUSINESS:
UNIFORMS:

  • Heather suggested buying shirts from K Mart/Best & Less and using iron-on labels. Thinks it would be a much cheaper option for parents and school could possibly make some money from it.
  • Barry suggested best to discuss it with supplier re issues, cheaper options, fabrics.
  • Concerns about quality of fabric & stitching
  • One child getting rashes from fabric and can’t wear new shirts
  • Tight fitting around neck, very long
  • Spray jackets tight around wrist
  • Candy to ask Bernie if she would be prepared to speak to supplier again re issues raised about affordability and quality

PROMOTING THE P&C

  • Consider possibility of morning meetings and/or afternoon meetings for parents/carers who are unable to make it to the night meetings.
  • From these meetings a different delegate each month could perhaps be elected to represent them at the P&C
  • In Term 2 Barry will look at which times might be most effective for people
  • To get people involved Karen suggested targeting a different class and their parents each month with appropriate guest speakers or information useful to them
  • Ensure meetings and newsletters are more specific, personalised, and focus on communication
  • Meetings need to be pre-planned and have a specific structure

STUDENT WELFARE

  • Concerns regarding bullying and the way in which it is being dealt with.
  • Concerns regarding SAT room especially for children in infants classes.
  • SAT room is confusing parents- Is it for detention? Is it: talking about issues? Is it productive or just reinforcing bad behaviour. Are children in the SAT room given any incentive to improve their behaviour? Do they get enough positive reinforecement? Are they noticed for good behaviour or just bad behaviour?
  • Teachers – duty of care when it comes to listening to and addressing children’s concerns
  • Teachers – duty of care to ensure effectiveness of SAT room to reduce bad behaviour & increase good behaviour.
  • Can we encourage more responsibility in children about mediating their own problems possibly with the help of a Year 6 mentor. How?
  • Is the bullying policy revisited often enough with students? Do children understand that verbal intimidation is as hurtful & damaging as physical bullying? Do they understand what verbal bullying is in every aspect

FUNDRAISING

  • Thanks to Lee-Anne for continuing to source fundraising ideas
  • Hot Cross Buns raised around $100. Orders to be delivered to school & collected from office 23/3/10
  • Need to cancel Family Photo day on 21/3/10 as only 5 families showed interest and need 18 orders to go ahead. Not good that it clashed with school photos in same week.
  • Entertainment Books are ready to be handed out any time now.
  • Still requesting chocolate eggs etc for Easter Raffle on Easter Hat Parade day on 1/4/10 at 1pm.

OTHER

  • Heather offered to investigate the possibility of starting up a Commonwealth Dolomite account for the school. No one knows how long it is since the school operated one
  • Heather will also look at whether we can source enough people to run a canteen effectively for the zone cross country. If she thinks there is enough support by the end of this week we will definitely feel confident in supporting Mrs Murphy with this important event.

Meeting Closed: 8.30pm

Next Meeting: Tuesday, 20th April 2010 6.30pm
Guest speaker: Clarice Hamling re flashing traffic lights for our school

WELCOME TO YOUR  2010 P&C REPS

PRESIDENT:  Dean Plows
VICE PRESIDENTS:  Scott Fraser and Lee-Anne Wrobel
TREASURER:  Lara Borrow
SECRETARY:  Candy Connors

A P&C must have 5 executive members to legally function. As these 5 people were the only people at the P&C AGM they each agreed to take a role so our P&C could operate -otherwise we would be left with no P&C at our school  ……………  so ……………………that means its SAFE for you all to come to meetings now!!Come on – be involved – meet new people& be part of the decision making process for your family. 6.30 -8pm 3rd Tuesday.

SUPPORTING YOUR KIDS
Want to know how to support your kids & their school?

  • Leave some Easter eggs at the office for the Easter raffle on Easter Hat Parade Day.
  • Come to the Easter Hat Parade on Thurs 1st  April 1pm. It involves all the children K-6 in some way. If you can’t make it maybe you could ask a relative or friend to be there for you.
  • Say “YES!” to Heather when she asks for an    hour or two of your time on Fri 7th May at the    Zone Cross Country. Our school is responsible for running the carnival this year & our very own Mrs Murphy is the convenor – woo hoo! We need to feed lots of hungry zone competitors and their supporters. All hands on deck will make for a successful carnival all round and earn us some much needed funds. We need a minimum of 5 to 6 helpers an hour. The first 10 to arrive get to wear our very flash red aprons & show clearly which school you love!!
  • Remember to acknowledge your teachers. They are committed to doing the best they can for all our children. Get to know them. Contact them when you have a concern but especially contact them just to say ‘hi’ – after all, they spend five days a week with our children!

THANK YOU

How lucky are we to have so many wonderful people taking care of our children & our environment, but also supporting us – the parents & carers………………………………….

We HAVE:

  • Mr Croft and his dedicated staff of   teachers & support workers

  • Jodie who manages our canteen and keeps it going for our kids
  • all our volunteers who help out in the classrooms, in the canteen, with transport, with fundraising, on our P&C etc
